I Swear...
...I think that problems at my job only come in one size. And that size is very large. Seriously. We almost never have small, quickly/easily fixed problems. We either have no problems at all, or we have giant, insanely time-consuming problems.
Guess which we had tonight! D=
It started out simple enough...one of the things I run gave an error. So, I called my boss (K) and asked him about it. He said to try calling A, who knows the most about it. So, I call him, and he tells me to call the software-provider's tech support line...but he doesn't have the number. So, I have to call K again and he points me at the company website. I find the number and call it...they have one of those automated menu systems. (Y'know, 'press 1 for [this]', etc.) Problem is...their descriptions don't make any sense to me. (As in, I don't know any of those names...we don't call the stuff anything remotely resembling them) Soooo, I call K and ask him if he knows another name for the stuff. He doesn't, but he does suddenly remember some sort of paperwork on his desk that was from that company. So, I dig around and find it; thankfully, it had not only the number, but the menu steps to get where I needed to be.
So, I call the number and talk with a girl there. Tell her what's up, and such. She asks if it can wait until tomorrow....I say no, we really need it now. So, okay, she's going to page someone and they'll call me back. Fine, I say. So, I wait. A while, honestly. After a bit, a guy calls me and says he's working on it, and he'll call me when it's fixed. (I'm watching him on my screen, since he's remote connected) He tinkers around for quite a while. (I end up talking to K, R, and pretty much the entire dispatch department, a few times as he's doing this)
Guy finally calls back...it's not fixed; they need a programmer to fix it. Again, can it wait until tomorrow? 'Cause the programmers are all at home by now. I end up calling K again, kinda frustrated, 'cause these guys keep pushing to do it later, and just being aggravating in general. (Seriously...quit trying to get out of helping me tonight! Also, don't waste so much time screwing around before you offer to call someone else in! I swear...someone once told me that this company's support sucked...they were sure right!) He confirms that no, it can't wait, and has me give him the guy's phone number so he can call him. So, again I wait, while he calls the guy. Finally, we hear that okay, a programmer is being called in to fix it. More waiting.
Lots more tinkering from them, while I sit around and twiddle my thumbs. And during all this, the folks from dispatch keep coming and going, and K keeps calling, to check in. Always I have to say, 'they're working on it...'. Grah. Finally, finally, they finish. Yay. So, I continue on with my nightly routine.
...Only, now, one of my queries doesn't return what it's supposed to. I should have a multiple screens full of data...I get six rows. So, I call K and let him know that they're done, and also ask him about the query. He says wait 'til dispatch downloads, then check that. Okay, so we do that...and they say they're missing a lot of data.
More calls back and forth with K, and now with R, as well. They're having me try things, and messing around with things, but with little luck. Eventually, K has both A and R working on it, and they finally get it straightened out. Wonderful. So, I continue on.
This was at about 10:30-11:00...normally, I'd be running those things at around 6:00. The problem turned up at a little after 5:30...it took us 5ish hours to get things going again. Grah. Also, this meant I was way late getting out...Normally, I'd leave work at about 10:30 or thereabouts. Today I didn't get to leave until 1:00. Yeah...then I had to rush home and get a bath; and I'm still going to have to blow-dry my hair...
...So, yeah. I'm tired. Today sucked. (Mondays are eeeeevil~!)
