Thoughts on Allegiant

Well, the third and final book in the Divergent series came out this week. I just finished it. And I'm having lots of feelings, so I have to blather a bit. XD

I...am not really sure how I feel about this one, to be honest. I feel like the pacing is not as good as the previous two. Also, I'm not entirely thrilled with the shifting perspectives. I can see why she did it, but it's just a little weird to suddenly have another viewpoint character this late in the game.

I was a bit annoyed at the repetitiveness of some things. They get outside, and promptly start doing the same thing they were doing inside, basically. Although, honestly....the whole "experiment" thing kinda bugged me. I got into these books in large part because I found the world interesting. And then she goes and tells us that it's just some freaky science experiment, and the real world isn't much different from reality. (Different history, since it's set in the future, but that's mostly it.)

And then the biggie. The ending. I...have mixed feelings.

I hate that she killed Tris. I liked her, and it broke my heart to see Tobias have to go on after she died. And I've been a big Tris/Tobias fan from the get-go. So I really wanted them to get their happy ending. I will say that the ending was handled pretty well, for what it was. For whatever reason, I keep wanting to compare it to the ending of the Hunger Games books. I think this one was actually slightly less upsetting, despite what happened to Tris. I guess because there's a sense of trying to move on and heal...in Mockingjay, things felt much more grim. There were surviving characters, but they all seemed so broken that they'd never have anything resembling a normal life again. Super depressing. Plus, here, the narrating character wasn't completely incomprehensible for the majority of the end, as was the case in Mockingjay =P And that helps.

Over all...I'll probably have to think about it a bit. But my first reaction is to say that I'd like to just take the first two books (minus the bit with the video at the end of book 2) and go from there. The whole "real world" thing bugged me a lot, I guess. I want to see how things might have ended up if the world we see in the first two books was real. That would have been a much more satisfying ending, to me. And Tris should have lived, damnit.

And now I want fix-it fic. XD Does this series even have a fandom? I'll have to poke around some this weekend.
