Well, it's the weekend. You know what that means. New anime~! =D

Spoilers for Darling in the FranXX episode 10 )

Spoilers for Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card episode 11 )

And thus ends this week's mini-review. I may keep doing this, we'll see. Depends on how many feelings I have after each episode, probably. LOL!
wildvision: (Sakura - Smile)
Yeah, I don't usually watch anime during the semester. Largely because I don't generally have the time. Plus, I like to binge watch, rather than just sneaking in an episode here or there. So I'd rather wait until the breaks, so I can marathon a series in a couple of days. And I have been really busy this semester, anyway. Lots of homework, a truly insane amount of reading, plus two extremely awkwardly scheduled courses...I'm spending the vast majority of my time just trying to stay on top of everything.

But, uh. My willpower failed me last weekend, and I ended up watching episodes of two different series. Two currently airing series, at that. (Which is something else that I don't do often. It's the binge watching thing again.) What series are they, you ask? Well, the first is Darling in the FranXX, and the second is Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card.

And I have some thoughts.

Darling in the FranXX - Spoilers for episodes 1-9 )

Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card - Spoilers for episodes 1-10 )

Overall, I'm enjoying them both, so far. I plan to keep watching, so I may or may not post about them again. We'll see. =D
wildvision: (Juri - Movie smile)
Well, my break is almost over, and it went by way too fast. (More on that in the next post.) I wanted to watch a little more anime, but I didn't have time for some of the longer series that I've been considering. So, I decided on this one. Just 24 episodes, and a perfect fit for the time I had left. Scrapped Princess is a series I'd heard of before, and I picked it up out of the recent holiday sale at RightStuf.

Spoilers, as usual )

Final verdict? So-so. It's not a bad series, by any means. But I expected more. The plot could have been handled better, and the characters could have been fleshed out more.
wildvision: (Books - Book fortress)
I picked up the first book of the Magnus Chase series a while back, when I caught it on sale. I finally got around to reading it a couple of days ago, and then I bought and read the other two books in the series. Unsurprisingly, I'm having feelings, so! Here's a brief review.

Spoilers for all three books )

Final verdict? I liked it, though not quite as much as the Percy Jackson books. Good, but could be improved a bit. Now, if only the fandom was bigger! I seriously want fic, but there's not a whole lot out there.
wildvision: (Watari - The scientist)
Well, now that I'm on break, it's no surprise that I decided to watch some anime! I don't know that I'll binge like I sometimes do in the summer, but I wanted to watch at least a couple. And this gets things off to a good start.

Spoilers for the whole series )

So, final verdict? I liked it. The beginning was a little slow, and the characters were a bit more eccentric at first, but both of those things get much better as the series progresses. I'd recommend it.

Also, apparently they're making another anime? Steins;Gate 0. About one of the failed future timelines, or something? I'm a little unclear on that. The sites I've seen say a Spring 2018 release, so I guess I'll keep an eye out for it. I'll want to see it.
wildvision: (Default)
What's this? Kat, watching anime before the semester's over? Shocking, I know. But this one was a short little six episode OVA, so I was able to binge it all at once.

Spoilers, as usual! )

Final verdict? Meh. If you like mindless action and don't require a solid plot to back it up, then you'll like this one. But if you care more about the story, you'll likely be disappointed. The title character is cool, but she's not really enough to carry this series all by herself. Decent bones, but lackluster execution.
wildvision: (Default)
Okay, so I've had a craving for some fic for a few of my old fandoms lately. Mostly Yoroiden Samurai Troopers. And I've been digging through archives, looking for fic. Including a lot of old, vanished sites, courtesy of the Wayback Machine. And holy cow. Talk about a time warp. Apparently, I am spoiled. These days, much of the fic I read is either on AO3 or FF.net. AO3 is always my first stop.

I mention this, because I'm finding that things were often done differently in these old archives, and it's driving me a little nuts. And it's weird, because I don't remember it being this way, back in the day. I don't know if I hung out on sites that did things differently, or if I was just used to it back then. Probably the latter, but eh.

Grumble, grumble... )

So, seriously...where's the good YST fic hiding? There must be some, right? Please, fandom?
wildvision: (Default)
Okay, so this is my last anime title for this summer's binge. (For real, this time!) Classes start next week, so my break is sadly, almost over. I decided to wrap things up with Spice and Wolf.

Only mild spoilers, this time! )

Final verdict? I liked it. It's an interesting and unique series, though you may need to look up some of the economics, as they don't explain things well. According to Wikipedia, the original form of this series is a lengthy series of light novels. And shockingly enough, they've been released in English! So, yeah, I think I'll need to be reading those. I want more!
wildvision: (Yami no Bakura - Manga)
My replacement disk for Yuugiou: Dark Side of Dimensions came today! I'm so glad. I mentioned before how I'd had to email the company and explain that the one I'd bought was defective. Well, after exchanging a couple of emails, they agreed to mail me a replacement. The last email was dated July 13th, so it took just shy of a month. Truthfully, though, I'd expected it would take longer than this. So, it was a pleasant surprise to have it so soon!

I didn't watch the whole thing; maybe I will, a bit later. (It is a really good movie, after all!) But I did pop it in just to check the subs. And just watching the first few minutes, I can tell it's different than last time. They have the correct Japanese names, and I remember a couple of specific lines that I'd noticed as being wrong in the old disk, and those were correct here. So, I'd say this one has the correct subtitle track. Yay~!

I have to admit...I was pretty ticked off when I found out that original disk was defective. But I have to give the production company credit. When I reached out, they made it right. So, kudos to you, Lionsgate!
wildvision: (Hisoka - Strength)
Okay, so I was wrong. Eureka Seven wasn't my last anime of the summer. I found Chivalry of a Failed Knight a little while ago, and it was so short, I could watch it in one day. (And have time left over!)

Some spoilers, I guess... )

Final verdict? Mixed. The concept is neat and the main cast are likable. But this show suffered from being far too short, and some odd plot choices. Plus, there's a lot of fanservice. So, it's a toss up. According to Wikipedia, this was based off a light novel series, and there's also a manga. I might look and see if I can find either of those to flesh out the plot a bit.
wildvision: (Default)
Well, I've finished another one! This may be my last anime for this summer's binge. I'm feeling ready for a break now, and I'm not sure if I'll want to watch more before classes start in a little bit. We'll see, I guess. The series I just finished is Eureka Seven, which I've been wanting to see for a while.

Spoilers, as usual )

So, final verdict? I liked it. I did have some issues with how long the audience was kept in the dark, and how some things were explained. But I did like it, and I think that I'll like it a lot more the second time around. This series is praised for its love story, and I agree. Renton and Eureka are the best part of the series, and it's absolutely worth watching if you like romance at all. (Or action, or sci-fi, or coming of age...Just watch it!)
wildvision: (Yuki/Shuichi - Bad Romance)
Well, summer break's almost over. Why does time always seem to fly so fast over break, but drag so much during the semester? Ugh.

I ordered my textbooks last night. I ended up with things kind of spread out. I think I bought two used from Amazon, I rented one from Amazon, and then I bought two more (new, I think) from MSU. That's what worked out best, price-wise. I think I spent somewhere around $330, or thereabouts. Which, yuck, but still. It would have been worse if I'd bought them all from MSU.

I think I remember reading that classes started on 8/15. I'll check, of course, because that was ages ago, and I might be wrong about that. But, that sounds right. I remember last year, thinking I had longer until the start of the fall semester, and being pissed that it actually started somewhere around 8/15. So, that's probably right. At least I'm not blindsided by it this time, but it still sucks.

Assuming I got the date right, I've got about two more weeks off before I have to start classes again. I'm trying to make the most of it, though no matter what I do, I'm going to want more time. I'm going to watch at least one more anime before then...I started Eureka Seven tonight, so that'll be my next review. I don't know if I'll have the time or energy to do any more after that; this might be my last one for this summer's binge session. We'll see.

...I really don't want to go back to school, guys. =(
wildvision: (Default)
Well, this is the last of the main Fate series. I believe there's a movie and a magical girl AU series, but I'm probably not going to watch those. Though, I've heard they're planning a trilogy of films to cover the third route from the VN. No idea when that'll be, though. So, for now, at least, this is it.

Spoilers, of course )

So, final verdict? I really liked it. I'd say you should just skip the original Fate/Stay Night anime and watch Fate/Zero and Unlimited Blade Works instead. You could probably watch them in either order; no matter what, watching one will spoil some parts of the other. I watched Zero, then UBW, and I feel that worked well. But I guess you could do the opposite, if you wanted.
wildvision: (Default)
Okay, so I decided to give Fate/Zero a chance, even though I had major problems with Fate/Stay Night. Based on reviews and posts talking about watching order, it seems the fandom's opinion is overwhelmingly that the later productions (that is, Zero and UBW) are far superior to the original. So, I was hopeful that maybe Zero would be better.

Spoilers, of course )

Final verdict? I loved it. If you liked FSN, you'll really like this. If you hated FSN, watch this anyway. It's what FSN should have been. And if you haven't seen FSN...skip that, and watch this instead.
wildvision: (Default)
So, I was actually going to watch Fate/Zero next, but I had issues with the video, so I decided to watch something else until I could straighten it out. I went with My Love Story!!, which I found out about through sheer dumb luck. I don't usually watch romance or slice of life anime, as a rule, but when I read the premise of this one, I had to try it.

No spoilers, I think! )

Final verdict? I loved it. If you like shoujo/romance anime, watch this. Even if you don't, watch it anyway. Now I need to see if I can find the manga. Wikipedia says there are 13 volumes, so there's a decent chance that not all of that fit into 24 episodes. And I would love to see more of Takeo and Yamato, and Suna~!
wildvision: (Default)
Short review, of a movie this time. I enjoyed Blood-C, so I wanted to try out the rest of the franchise, though they don't seem to have much to do with one another. I decided to start at the beginning, with the movie, Blood: The Last Vampire.

No spoilers, I think )

Final verdict? It was a fun movie, but short. So I want more. I'll definitely be looking into watching Blood+, which is the next part of the franchise.
wildvision: (Default)
Another anime review. I've actually had this one in my to-be-watched stack for a while, now. I was mostly deterred by the fact that there are several series in this franchise, and that, with the exception of the first series, the DVD sets for the the others are ludicrously expensive. I didn't want to get started and be unable to continue. But, when I was looking for places to stream anime recently, I thought to check and see if Netflix offered anything subtitled. They did, and among them are the other two Fate series. So, I decided to go ahead and give the first series a watch.

Spoilers, as usual )

Final verdict? I honestly didn't like it much. There were a couple of good characters, but that's about it. I will say, though, that most fans seem to think that the later series (Fate/Zero and Unlimited Blade Works) are much better than the first one. So, I might give one of those a chance, despite how I felt about this one. I've got access to them, so I do think I'll try them at some point. But not right now. Plus, Fate/Zero has Saber but no Shirou, and UBW is supposed to be Rin's route, so maybe she'll get more focus there. And those two were about the only things I liked about this series, so. It might be worth a try.
wildvision: (Amaterasu & Waka - My co-pilot)
Well, I watched another short little anime this week. It's called Rideback, and I'd never heard of it until I saw it listed on RightStuf. It had a unique premise, so I decided to check it out.

Spoilers, as always )

Final verdict? I think this one's kind of middle of the road. Not terrible, by any means, but not that good, either. The main thing it has going for it is the cast, but I don't know that they're enough to carry it. I will say, though, that Wikipedia says that this was originally a 10 volume manga series, which became a 12 episode anime. So, I wonder. The manga might explain things better than the anime did. Not sure if I'm invested enough to check it out. We'll see.
wildvision: (Default)
This one was a bit of a quickie. Just 12 episodes, and then one movie. I watched the series itself in one sitting, and then the movie the next day. So, here are my thoughts!

Massive spoilers withiin )

So, final verdict? Honestly, I liked it. It's not perfect, and I do wish we got some more backstory on Saya, in particular. But it was fun to watch. If you're a fan of other Blood titles, you might feel differently, I don't know. But if you're a first-time fan, like me, I'd say give it a shot. Provided you can handle the gore, of course.
wildvision: (Default)
Well, I finally found a fansub with English subtitles, so I got to watch this movie!

Spoilers~! )

So, final verdict! This was actually really good. Like, really. It was better than I expected it would be. I mean, it's Yuugiou, so I kinda figured I'd like it at least a little bit, no matter what. But I didn't expect a lot. (I remember Pyramid of Light) But it was honestly really fun, and I liked it a lot. So, if you're a YGO fan at all, go watch it. If you're not, then watch/read the series first. This'll be a little confusing if you don't.
