Weekend Anime Mini-Review

Well, it's the weekend. You know what that means. New anime~! =D

I was a little surprised by this episode, but in a good way. I was expecting something more action oriented, but honestly, we needed a world building episode. And I was also surprised at how much I enjoyed it, given that it was a Zorome-centered episode and he's probably my least favorite character. But I liked him in this one. I feel like maybe he grew up a little, which is good. Out of all the pilots, he's the one who held to the most childlike attitude toward the adults and the cities and all. I always cringed a little when he'd talk about it, simply because it was pretty obvious that his innocent worldview was going to get badly broken at some point. It wasn't as harsh an awakening as I'd expected, truthfully. But I get the feeling that his eyes have been opened, at least a little.

And now I really want to know who the heck that lady was. He said she felt familiar to him, and she acted a little hinky when she denied it. She looks way too old to be his mom, but who knows. Maybe his grandma? Which makes me think, with the talk of the pilots growing up in an orphanage...you have to wonder where their parents are. Were they simply orphaned, or is this part of the larger spiderweb of this twisted society? Given how the lady talked about having a partner, but there being no ties between them, I wonder. That sounds consistent with a society that would birth children, only to dump them into some sort of institution to raise by default. Like, they did their duty by procreating, but they had no interest or obligation to raise them or bond with them. Creepy, but it fits what little we've seen of this world so far.

Plus, it was interesting to see a little of what things were like in the cities. I half expected them to be empty, with the way Zero Two kept saying that they were lifeless, and she seemed almost depressed at being there. Though, what we did see wasn't good. And from how jaded she acts sometimes, I bet this is only the tip of the messed up iceburg. I can't wait to see it! (And that sounds weird; I just mean I'm looking forward to seeing where they take this.)

Speaking of 'can't wait to see it', Clear Card continues to tease at the plot, without giving up the answers just yet. I said before that there were obvious parallels between Sakura and Akiho. Well, now it's becoming more obvious that there are further parallels between these new Clear Cards and the original Clow Cards. I'd kind of thought so before, but it's been a while since I saw the original CCS, so I wasn't sure. But they actually commented on it in this week's episode, so I guess I was right. A lot of the new cards she's catching have direct counterparts in the Clow/Sakura Cards.

I'm just not sure where they're going with it. It reminds me of the later part of the original, where she had to change the Clow Cards into Sakura Cards. Take them and make them her own. Which is what it kind of feels like she's doing now. But that would be completely redundant, so I doubt that's it. Hmm.

Oh, and I was totally right about Kaito being Yue-like! Shaoran met him in this episode, and when he talked to Eriol he told him that this guy had Moon energy. Though, the information Eriol had to offer was interesting...the possibility of this guy being a high-ranked mage in some English secret society? Well, it's not the Moon Guardian I half expected him to be, so that's probably a better idea. I'm curious to see where they'll go with it.

And I still want to know why Eriol and Shaoran are going behind Sakura's back about all this. Why aren't they sharing information with her? What are they hiding? Heck, what do they know that we (the audience) don't know yet? So curious~!

And thus ends this week's mini-review. I may keep doing this, we'll see. Depends on how many feelings I have after each episode, probably. LOL!
