Umineko Episode 6

Witch Hunt released the episode 6 patch last weekend, and I've just now finished reading it. *Squee*

-- Okay, what's this now? Hachijo Tohya is a mystery writer, and a 'message bottle forger', who wrote 'End of the Golden Witch'? Along with 'Alliance' and 'Banquet'? So...does that mean that we should discount those games? Bwuh?

-- But then it says that her works were the closest to those written by Maria. ('Legend' and 'Turn', right?) Hmm.

-- Maybe not...here, it turns out she's actually a witch, who's been observing Beatrice's game with Battler. Interesting.

-- So this new witch has somehow revived Ange, for the purpose of making her an 'observer'? What's going on with this, I wonder? 'An observer of the Fragments Beatrice has woven.' Hmm...

-- Okay, I see. She'd been watching the game through Battler's eyes, but since he's the Game Master now, she needs someone else to be her eyes. And that's Ange. And what Ange gets out of it is that she can follow the game, too. She can try to find out the truth. Which is what she wants.

-- And apparently she's of a higher level than Bernkastel and Lambdadelta? Interesting~ And it's a little funny to hear her little 'If anyone messes with you, they mess with me' speech. Obviously, it's not said out of any love for Ange, but still.

-- And we've got a name. Witch of Theatergoing, Featherine Augustus Aurora. That's actually kinda pretty, if long.

-- "Father"?! O_o Okay, a Beatrice piece, used by Battler isn't too surprising. But it called him 'father'...that's just kinda creepy.

-- Hell, even Lambdadelta thinks it's weird. The 'father', plus this Beatrice acting all polite and sedate...seriously weird!

-- This is just sorta creepy...Battler comes out, and is somewhat cold to this new Beatrice. Plus, this Beatrice herself...she's just so clearly not Beatrice, no matter how much she looks like her. It's weeeeeeird! What's going on, anyway? Who is this woman?

-- Wait a minute...didn't they already explain why Maria couldn't revive Sakutaro? And here, Featherine's giving a different reason. She says that Sakutaro is Maria's piece...that makes sense, I guess. And that, since she lost the unique stuffed animal that was his vessel, the conditions for that piece's existence were violated. So it became impossible to revive him on her game board. And the only reason Ange was able to revive him was that she had once again satisfied the conditions for his existence. What does that even mean? She somehow got another stuffed lion that was exactly the same? Or she repaired the old one? If so, why was this not mentioned in 'Alliance'? =/

-- I don't get it...here, even Ange agrees. Sakutaro is a piece, who required a vessel for his existence. As long as his vessel is safe, he can be revived as often as necessary.

-- Talking about the two kinds of death in this world...the death of a piece on a game board (see above), and the death of a person outside the game board. It doesn't have to be that person's literal death...something like disinterest would have the same effect. Using Maria as an example, when Maria outgrew playing with stuffed animals, 'Maria the game player' would die.

-- So...in episode 5, Beatrice-the-player totally gave up on winning, and thus she died. "If so, and if Beato thinks that she has a chance of defeating Onii-chan (Battler) again, she'll come back to life, right?" Featherine agrees; "Logically, that is true. It's the same for humans, witches, and even gods. If they lose interest and concern, they can die at any time. And if they regain that interest, they can revive at any time. ...However, the concept of time does not exist in the world of gods, who can revive whenever they want, time shoots by like an arrow in the human world, and it is not so easy there."

-- So, basically...even though someone could revive from death, if they'd been dead for a really long time, they'd never be able to go back to the person they were before...it would have been too long ago?

-- Here, Featherine says that Beatrice lost hope of winning, but pretended that she hadn't and kept playing for several games. But she will not return...her willpower had been crushed, and so that particular Beatrice would never revive. ...This is confusing. =P

-- "That Beato, who just sat around the whole time with empty eyes in the 5th game...must have been her corpse. She had managed to remain on the game board despite it all...but then even that corpse was wiped away. If Beato had been the Game Master at that time instead of Lambdadelta, the game board itself would have vanished at that moment, and everything would have ended. Come to think of it, Beato started to lose the will to fight back near the end of the 4th game. When Beato loses the will to fight...the world of this game board disappears. However, the witches wanted to keep playing in this game board world, so Lambdadelta bound Beato in place with the curse of that shackle. She used that shackle to make sure the game board wouldn't disappear, even if Beato did lose the will to fight. In chess, this would be the equivalent of removing the set time limit for each turn, making it endless. However, simply having the game endlessly paused on Beato's turn would cause the witches to die from their illness of boredom. That's why Lambdadelta took the position of Game Master. ...Starting then, Beato's existence was no longer one of the conditions necessary for the game to exist. That's probably why the shackles binding her to the game board were released. And that explains why she disappeared in the 5th game."

-- Hee. "Onii-chan only wants the real Beato. He couldn't bear having only a doll that acted like Beato..." So basically, he wouldn't be satisfied with a piece-Beato, because she'd just follow his wishes. She wouldn't do anything unexpected, and would just do whatever he told her to. And that's not what he wants. So he's trying to revive her in the truest sense...the real Beato, the player...that's who he wants. <3

-- Wait, what? Beatrice is an incarnation of the rules? Huh? "Information began to be accumulated based around that rule, and in the end, it took the form of the witch known as Beatrice. If that pattern is followed once more, the same Beatrice will be born again, and perhaps one could call that a resurrection." Bwuh?

-- "In other words, that weird Beato...is like an egg of Beato, or else a chick. In short, this Beato is a chick that might become Beato. And that means...this pure and loveable kid will eventually grow into that screwed up, crazy witch." So, basically...this is what Beato was like in the beginning? Before she'd lived a thousand years and gone nutty? No one is born evil, Beatrice included. She started out okay, but eventually grew into the witch we know from previous games. I think I get it.

-- Ha, Battler does respect Beatrice. I sorta wondered if he might, before. =D

-- Aww, and see how happy he gets when Genji tells him that Beatrice is awake? That's just adorable. XD "Battler's face broke into a smile. And there was no trace in his expression of the hatred he had once felt toward Beato for murdering his family..." It's so neat to see how their interactions have evolved from the first game to now~

-- And now we're back to the issue of whether there was something between Battler and Beato before these games. His opinion of her greatly changed once he found the truth, and fully understood her games. And he had asked her about it back in the 4th game...if he'd done something to her in the past. She denied it then, though. And now, Featherine's hypothesizing that Battler somehow created Beatrice? Huh?

-- Okay, so Battler sinned six years ago. And Beatrice massacring his family six years later is in retaliation for that. Yet, once Battler figured out the truth, he apologized to Beatrice and didn't hate her. What's this going to turn out to be, I wonder...

-- Aww! Battler goes to see the newly revived Beatrice, and he hugs her tight and cries, he's so happy. And he tells her that he solved her riddle, like she asked. Even though I know it's about to fall apart, the shipper in me still likes this scene. ^^;;

-- Poor Battler, though...he wanted her back so badly, and thought he'd gotten his wish...but she's just not the same person. Kumasawa and Genji even said the same thing as Featherine...if this Beato lived for a thousand years, she might turn into the Beato that Battler wanted. I was a little surprised by him breaking things, though. He gets mad and starts smashing plates? I dunno...

-- What are Shannon and Kanon going on about, acting like only one of them can be with their loved one? George and Shannon are already dating, and Kanon admitted that he loves Jessica...so why can't they both have what they want? Why are they talking about who's going to 'win', like it's a contest? Like only one of them can be in love? I don't get it. =P

-- Oh my God, Jessica and Kanon are so absurdly adorable~! =D

-- Wow, Kanon's real name! Finally! Haha, so it's 'Yoshiya'? Interesting.

-- Writing his name on her hand...so cute~

-- I'm with Ange...I feel sorry for this new Beato. She knows that she's not who Battler wants, yet she wants to help him however she can. Poor thing. =(

-- So, wait...the whole 'lived for a thousand years' thing isn't literal? Well, that's interesting...and it actually sort of makes sense. In almost all the witches profiles, it talks about them living for a thousand years. The idea that they're all exactly a thousand years old is a bit too much for a coincidence, yeah? "As you get closer to the world of the gods, the concept of time becomes increasingly vague. Six years can become a thousand, and a thousand years can be nothing more than a quick nap. One can fit an eternity long enough to be deserving of the title 'one hundred year old witch' in a mere two weeks. In other words...the pure Beato transformed into the cruel Beato in those six years that could be called a thousand."

-- Dude...so...Beatrice was created by Battler, six years ago. And somehow, he sinned against her. She turned into the crazy witch we know, and went after his family as revenge. Is that it?

-- Ha, Kumasawa! As she's comforting new!Beatrice, she tells her that she's still Beatrice, but just doesn't have her memories..."Even without your memory, you're still Beatrice-sama. You are the same person whom the Master loves." This game is making me a happy shipper. XD

-- And Virgilia has a full name, too? Interesting. "The Endless and Finite Witch Publius Virgilia Maro"

-- So now there's another new!Beatrice? One who's actually a witch, and apparently closer in personality to the real Beatrice? Interesting...here, the meek Beatrice realizes that they're both immature, incomplete forms of Beatrice...and that, together, maybe they can become the real thing. I wonder...

-- Damn...I never did like Erika, but seriously? Picking on a little kid like that? That's low. I don't even like kids, and I still think she's being awful...sicking Dlanor on her, really? =P

-- Interesting little bit of backstory on George, there. And the George/Shannon bits are always adorable~

-- I really am wondering if these two Beatrice-fragments will be able to join together into the real Beatrice. I hope so...Beatrice is one of my favorites, and I miss the old her. But I don't know how likely it is...

-- Okay, seriously...these scenes with the person (who I, for some reason, think is female) trapped in a room...what's up with them? Who is this person, and why are they stuck? What's going on?

-- ...Battler's being kind of an ass in this game, isn't he? I mean...I can understand that he's upset, and I would be, too. But still...that's no reason to take it out on new!Beatrice. It's not her fault that she's not who he wanted, and she loves him and only wants to help. So, really...he doesn't have to be attached to her, but he should at least be a little nicer. =P Yay for Kumasawa, though, for standing up for new!Beatrice. <3

-- I'm confused...now they're talking like the original Beatrice is the one who created this meek Beatrice? And that she's a piece? That doesn't make sense...earlier, they were saying that she wasn't a piece. Argh, this is confusing. =P

-- Well, this is promising. Battler's starting to realize what a jerk he was to new!Beatrice. And here's the idea that he should think of her as the real Beatrice's daughter...that might work. She's so much like her, but not her at all. It kinda fits.

-- Seeing George and Eva fight like this is a little sad. I mean...I'm on George's side. He loves Shannon, and he should fight for her. But still...I like Eva, and I really believe that she loves her son very much. So, while she almost certainly has additional motives, I do think that she's trying to do what she thinks is best for him. It's not actually what's best, but she thinks it is. So I feel sorry for her, to see her so upset at how George is yelling at her. Even if he's right, and this needs to be done...it's still a little sad.

-- ...Holy crap. How the hell is Eva-Beatrice still around?! Whaaaaaaat? O_O

-- Did I mention how much I love George? <3 He's so badass, seriously...it's awesome. XD

-- So, wait...now, George knows who Gaap is, and references the events in episode 4? How does he remember that? O_o

-- And is Eva really dead? Seriously? O_o

-- Ah, I see. This was all part of the trial that the lovers had to complete. So, no, it wasn't real. That's how Eva-Beatrice was still around, and Eva's not actually dead. Good, I guess. XD

-- Am I the only one who thinks that the whole thing of pitting George/Shannon versus Jessica/Kanon is kind of...unbalanaced? I mean...George and Shannon are in a serious relationship. They've dated a while, and are ready to get married. Jessica and Kanon just barely started dating. It's kind of ridiculous to have them fighting for this prize alongside George and Shannon. Their relationship isn't nearly as serious. Hell, Kanon is likely Jessica's first boyfriend. For anyone to assume that they'll be together forever is quite ridiculous. They might end up getting married, but they could just as easily end up growing apart long before that happened. So, really...this just seems silly. I find myself rooting for George and Shannon, just because I know that they're really serious about this. No matter what they say, I just can't believe the same of Jessica and Kanon. And I ship them, too! It just...it's too serious, too soon. It doesn't fit, and it bugs me. =P

-- Well, this is neat. Finally, they're explaining the whole mess with Rudolf, Kyrie, and Asumu. So, Kyrie had become Rudolf's business partner, and was his favorite of the girls who followed him. She became complacent in that, and thought that her intelligence and business instincts made her the partner that he needed; that she would eventually become his life partner, as well. But Rudolf began to need something else from his partner...someone quiet, who wouldn't go on about complicated things, and who would take care of him. Kyrie didn't realize this, and Rudolf came to find those things in Asumu. Before she knew it, Rudolf had come to favor Asumu over Kyrie, and eventually married her.

-- Then, both Kyrie and Asumu got pregnant. Asumu found out first, and told Rudolf. (Presumably this is about when they got married.) Kyrie didn't find out that she was pregnant until later, and when she told him, Rudolf was willing to acknowledge her child. He even visited her, even though his own wife was about to give birth. They both had the same delivery date, even. Man...and then, Asumu had Battler, while Kyrie's baby was stillborn. Damn.

-- Wait...now they're hinting at witches being involved with Kyrie getting Rudolf in the end? "And I'm grateful to my master...for giving me that chance. My 'certain willpower' in not giving up on that man no matter what was answered with a 'miracle'."

-- Okay, this is really creepy. Here, Kyrie's talking about getting up the resolve to do something about it all...she finally decided to kill Asumu with her own hands, but then she died on her own. That was her miracle...not that Asumu died, since she was going to die no matter what...but that she died on her own, so Kyrie didn't have to get her hands dirty. I'm...not sure how to think of Kyrie, now. O_o

-- Dude...creepy-grey-eyed-Jessica trying to kill Kyrie, then Leviathan showing up? Did Kyrie summon her? She seems to know who she is, somehow...

-- Man, these trials are kinda freaky, huh? George vs. Eva, Jessica vs. Kyrie, Kanon vs. Rosa, Shannon vs. Maria, and then, finally, new!Beatrice vs. Natsuhi...

-- Wow. Battler showed up, and apologized to new!Beatrice. =D Good for him. And dude...he's going to complete the trial with her? =D =D

-- Okay, first twilight! So, the victims were the same as the ones in the trial, apparently. Eva, Kyrie, Rosa, Maria, and Natsuhi...damn, that's all the women in the Ushiromiya family, except Jessica. I didn't notice that, before. And Battler's sacrifice...was himself. That's interesting. And it actually makes a lot of sense. I'd wondered earlier at how casual Battler was about having killed someone. It makes sense that, if he had to kill someone...it'd be the piece version of himself. Cool. =)

-- Well, this is...interesting. Now, they're saying that crimes committed by magic have to be possible by human means...otherwise, it's not a fair game. And then Ange remembers when she asked the Seven Sisters to kill her classmates, and they told her that they couldn't. It was because she wasn't capable of doing it herself. If she'd been able to kill them, and pull it off, then the Sisters could have done it for her. Hmm...

-- ...And here's Rudolf mentioning telling Kyrie and Battler 'the truth' about something...didn't he do that in the first game? And then it was never explained what that truth was? Hmm...

-- Well, this is interesting! Here, Battler and new!Beatrice are talking about what'll happen when the game ends...whether she'll disappear when the game board does. "The game will probably disappear...But now, I completely understand magic. So I'll be able to carry you off the game board...I think that was your wish." <3

-- *Facepalm* I knew that taking pity on Erika would come back to bite Battler in the ass. =P Why on earth did he do that? Geez...

-- ...Damn. Erika...killed all the first twilight victims? They'd been playing dead, until she came to examine the crime scenes...then she killed them all to prove their deaths. That's the one way a non-detective human can declare someone's death in red...if they killed the person themselves. And that's also why she didn't make the detective's proclamation earlier...according to Knox, the detective can't be the culprit. But she's not the detective this time...Wow. I seriously never saw that coming.

-- Although, I suppose the whole 'victims playing dead' thing makes sense. Battler's running this game. Even though he's gotten somewhat more used to it than he was in the beginning...it'd still be hard for him to kill off his own family members. Even if they were only pieces. So, having all six people fake their deaths makes sense, for a move by him. Hrm.

-- I was honestly wondering about this...all those scenes before, with some unknown person trapped in a room...they were from Battler's perspective. I'd thought of that as a possibility, but the tone didn't sound like his voice, so I wasn't sure...not to mention that the timing was odd. At that point, he wasn't trapped yet...so it seemed strange to have those bits that early in the story. But I guess that's what it is, after all. And here's the point where he finally gets stuck. Yikes. >_>

-- ...Or maybe not? Here, Lambdadelta says that she'd been trapped like that before...she actually seemed sincere in offering Battler advice 'from a survivor'. Granted, you can never really know when to take what Lambdadelta and Bernkastel say seriously...they all lie very well, and for lots of crazy reasons. So, who knows. But, that would explain why I thought the narration before sounded feminine...if it was flashbacks from Lambdadelta, that is. Although, thinking back...I think some of the stuff that sealed the closed room in those scenes matches Battler's problem now, so it probably really was him. Hrm.

-- Haha, I gotta say, I like the scenes with Featherine and Ange. They're so funny together, sometimes. XD

-- Well, that's interesting...Beatrice was only 19? Curious...I'd have thought her older than that. (Although, it does maybe explain her occasional childishness. XD)

-- Man, Kanon vs. Shannon. And Shannon won. Not that I wanted to see either of them lose, but if it had to be that way, this is the outcome I'd prefer. Still...poor things.

-- Okay, this whole sham wedding between Battler and Erika is just massively creepy. Even though I'm fairly sure that Battler will get out of this somehow, it's still kinda cringe-worthy. I just feel bad for him.

-- ...OMG...Is Beatrice back? I mean...the real Beatrice, that we all know and love from the previous games? =D =D

-- And I'm really starting to wonder...they keep referring to the alter in the cathedral as 'the grave', and calling marriage itself similarly...I wonder if this has anything to do with the title of the next game. Episode 7 is going to be called "Requiem of the Golden Witch"...I'd been worrying that it meant what it sounds like...but now I wonder. It still might mean that, but who knows~

-- Dude, Erika and Beatrice are going to duel? This could be fun! =D

-- Wow...Kanon, going to get Battler out of his closed room. Offering to stay there in his place. Poor Kanon...but still, Battler had to get out, somehow...

-- Well, it looks like Erika's finally finished. Can't say I'll be sad to see her go. XD

-- ...Dude, Battler and Beatrice got married? He's the territory lord, and she's his wife? *Squee*

-- Aww, they brought back Kanon, and made him human! =D Now he can be with Jessica~

-- And they recognized George and Shannon's union. =D I swear, this game is making me such a happy shipper~

-- Heh, and Ange even made nice with Hachijo at the end. =) That's nice.

-- *Jaw drops* What the hell was up with that phone call between Amakusa and Okonogi? I would have thought better of Okonogi to start with, but Amakusa?! How could he do that? I always liked him, damn it! =P I mean...the bit about killing Kasumi's guards makes sense...but the implication that he should kill Ange if Kasumi's goons didn't manage it? What the fuck, seriously?!

-- So Featherine was the one who toyed with Bernkastel, way back when? Her old master? Interesting...it looks like Bern's still afraid of her, even. Hmm.

-- Wait...what? How is Bernkastel the Game Master? Isn't the game over? O_o And even if it isn't...the game board should still belong to Battler, shouldn't it?

-- Damn...I really don't have any idea what to expect from the next game. With Bernkastel as the Game Master...who the hell will be her opponent? Battler already reached the truth and proved it, so surely he couldn't be it. But I don't know who else would...not to mention, why Battler and Beatrice would still be around, if neither of them is playing. Hrm. It's weird...after episode 5, I was so psyched for episode 6. But now, after I've finished it...I'm looking forward to episode 7, but with less enthusiasm than last time. I don't know. I guess...I just have no idea where this is going, anymore. It feels like, in the meta world at least, episode 6 should have been the end. But it's not, so I have no idea what's going to come next.

-- Also, randomly, I'm a little disappointed that they never really used the gold truth. They introduced it at the very end of episode 5, and I expected to see it again here. I think they maybe used it once, but it wasn't really dealt with. So, that's a little odd.

-- Something else I'd like to know...back in episode 4, Beatrice said in red that Asumu wasn't Battler's mother. So, who is? They never explained that. In this episode, we got some good backstory on the whole Kyrie-Rudolf-Asumu triangle...but they never did touch on that. In fact, I'm pretty sure that Kyrie said that Battler was Asumu's son. She could be wrong, of course, but still. I wanna know~

-- Overall impressions: I mostly liked it. I don't think that it was as good as episode 5, though. I'd have liked to see more game board stuff, honestly. And I'm really curious as to how they're going to move into the next game. From purely looking at the meta stuff...it almost feels finished. I know it's not, obviously, but it sorta feels that way. I really wonder what they're going to do in episode 7...

Man...Episode 7 doesn't even come out until August. Then, it'll be a fair while after that before we see a translation patch. I can hardly wait~!
